if절을 대신하는 without

 

Unit 1. Euphemism

 

while these euphemisms might seem silly,/

이런 완곡어법들이 어리석어 보일지도 모르지만

they can be useful in protecting people's feelings./

그들은 사람들의 감정을 보호하는데 유용할 수 있다.

Without them, / (=if it were not for them :these euphemisms)

그것들이 없다면

our culture would be more honest/ but much rougher!

우리의 문화는 더 솔직해질것이다/그러나 매우 거칠 것이다

가정법에서 if절을 대신하는 without: ~이 없다면(가정법 과거)

                                                ~이 없었다면 (가정법 과거완료)

Without oxygen, all living things would die out. 산소가 없다면, 모든 생물은 죽어 없어질것이다.

(=if it were not for oxygen)

 

Without his advice, I would have failed. 그의 충고가 없었더라면, 나는 실패했을텐데.

(=if it had not been for his advice)
